The 2027 Europeans will be played in Valpolicella

The European Kubb Championships are coming to Italy for the first time, to the via Tofane sports grounds in San Pietro in Cariano. There’s a year to learn the game, and you don’t have to be an expert when you get there.

In 2027, Valpolicella will become the centre of European Kubb for a few days. The European Kubb Championships, the biggest competition in the sport on the continent, will take place at the via Tofane sports grounds in San Pietro in Cariano. It is the first time the European Kubb Championships have been held in Italy.

The event is being organised by A.S.D. Kubb Italia. The association was founded in October 2024 to spread the sport in Italy and give it a proper structure. Kubb is still little known here, but it is already well established in several European countries.

The EKC bring together hundreds of players from many countries and are played in several formats. Previous editions have drawn players from Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, Austria and Italy. The 2025 European Championships in France had around 380 participants from a range of countries.

Bringing a European competition of this size to Valpolicella is a serious organisational challenge, and preparations are already under way. They will take the cooperation of public institutions, the people who run the sports grounds, local associations, volunteers, local businesses, partners and sponsors. The aim is not just to host three days of competition. It is to build an event that gets the whole area involved and leaves something behind for the community once the flags have been folded away.

In the months before the event, the association will run tournaments, training sessions, open days and other events, for complete beginners too. You won’t need to be an experienced player — in fact, this is exactly the right time to start. Learn now, and a year from now you’ll be playing in a European Championship on home soil — and there aren’t many sports you can say that about.

Kubb is a sport of throwing, precision and strategy, played outdoors on grass. Two teams face off, throwing wooden sticks to knock down the other side’s wooden blocks, the kubbs. The king stands in the middle of the pitch, and he can only be hit once all of the opponent’s kubbs are down. It calls for aim, a controlled throw, tactical sense and teamwork, not a particular physique. Children, adults and older people all play, often in the same team.
